About SafeHaven of Tarrant County

In February 2006, Women’s Haven of Tarrant County and The Women’s Shelter in Arlington merged to create SafeHaven of Tarrant County.   Through the merger, we consolidated administration, reorganized the service delivery system and maintained ALL programs of both agencies.  With a combined total of 58 years of experience, we found it necessary to expand services in the community to better serve the growing numbers and diverse needs of all domestic violence victims.

The mission of SafeHaven is to end family violence through safety, support and social change.

SafeHaven Programs and Services

24 Hour Crisis Hotline
The crisis line is staffed 24 hours a day by employees and trained volunteers to facilitate shelter entry and to give information and referrals.  This staff is the first point of entry for victims who have been battered.  They are trained to calmly deal with families in crisis and provide our callers with compassion and information.  The staff create an environment in which victims feel safe to discuss their needs and ask for help.

Emergency Shelters
SafeHaven operates two emergency shelter facilities located in Fort Worth and Arlington.  While in the shelter, residents receive meals, personal care items, clothing, transportation assistance, legal assistance, and childcare.  With the assistance of two Fort Worth Independent School District teachers, the Fort Worth shelter operates to classrooms.

Transitional Living
Transitional housing is provided to victims and their children seeking self-sufficiency and independence.  Services provided include financial planning, career counseling, legal resources, community support services, parent training, life skills and rental assistance.  Clients’ participation in this program ranges from 3 months to 2 years.

Counseling and Legal Services
Counselors, social workers and legal advocates provide counseling, support groups, case management, legal assistance, play therapy and education to victims of domestic violence.  The outreach component is extensive in its efforts to serve specialized and underserved populations of the community.  Legal services include assistance with Protective Orders and Crime Victims Compensation.  Programs focus attention on the needs of victims in health care settings, the particular needs of minority and immigrant women and provide counseling to low income and indigent women at no cost.  Specialized curriculum has been established for anger management and understanding the source of emotional stress, particularly depression.  Counseling services are provided to men through our state approved batterer’s intervention and prevention programs.

Victims Assistance

SafeHaven partners with local law enforcement. This partnership provides training to police  offices on family violence and on-site intervention to victims.  In addition, we collaborate with hospitals and clinics to help assist women and children affected by domestic violence.

Bilingual Services
This culturally sensitive program provides advocacy to Hispanic women and children seeking refuge from domestic violence.  Services include individual counseling, support groups, case management and legal assistance.

Educational Services
Community education heightens the awareness of domestic violence and available services.  Age appropriate presentations focus on domestic violence prevention and intervention.  These services are provided to children in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as, to individuals in community groups, businesses and to the faith based community.
