| How common is
family violence? How many people are affected?
|
|
Abuse against women and children is
far more common than any of us want to believe. It happens to
people in our neighborhoods, places of employment, religious
communities and our families. In the United States, as many as
1.3 million women physically and/or sexually abused by their husband
or boyfriend (U.S. Department of Justice, 2000); and as many
as 10 million children experience family violence each year
(Texas Council on Family
Violence, 2003). |
| |
| Who is the
most at risk for being a victim of family violence? |
|
Family violence can happen to
anyone, anywhere, at any time. It is an epidemic that crosses
all socio-economic, ethnic and religious groups. In fact, 1 in
3 women have been victims of domestic violence at some point in
their lives (Journal of American Medical Association, 2001).
In addition, domestic violence is not limited to adults. Over
40% of male and female high school students reported they had been
victims of dating violence at least once (National Center for
Victims of Crime, 2004). |
| |
| What should I do
if I see a family violence assault in progress? |
|
Family violence is a crime,
punishable by law, and it is important that we all work together
to end it. If you witness a family violence assault in progress,
call 911 immediately.
Never assume that someone else is looking out
for the victim’s safety, or that it is none of your business.
Family violence is everyone’s business.
Report all information—including physical
descriptions, the incident, any threats, etc.—to the police
immediately. Keep in mind that your safety is important too. Never
put yourself in harm’s way. |
| |
| What happens if
the batterers show up at the shelter? |
|
The location of the shelter is kept
confidential in an attempt to avoid this problem. If a batterer does
find the shelter and refuses to leave, we call the police. If
the abuser
finds the shelter, we move the woman to another shelter for her
safety. |
| |
| What if the
women goes back to live with the abuser? Can she come back to the
shelter? |
|
If a woman chooses to return to the
battering partner, we counsel her on how to keep herself safe (such as
developing a safety plan), recognize the cycle of violence in her family, and get out before
she gets seriously hurt. We make sure she is aware she cannot
change the abusers behavior. We encourage her to continue
counseling and support groups through SafeHaven. |
| |
| What is a
Personal Safety Plan? |
|
A safety plan is important to
anyone involved in an abusive relationship. It helps victims create
a plan to be safe during an explosive event, when leaving an abuser,
while obtaining a protective order and while at home, in the
workplace and in the courtroom. For more information on a
Personal Safety Plan, click

Hotline at 877-701-7233 |
